Going home; the tale of generals fading rather than retiring
Lawrence Nzuve now reporting from Nairobi on the final flight over the sites
It was inevitable except when it came it was rather unexpected. Thus the Gang last Friday left the sites of the Cradle of Makind to the heart of civilisation
First the last pleasantries and it was evident that some were not willing to leave except for the necessity, what with the events of the last few days
And then it was time for the emotional farewell. Some of us really had to retreat to the relative safety of the plane so we could look out of the window and see the waving from our colleagues
Very soon it was clear that we were actually flying over the sites for the last time in 2007 June-August field season and that was not helping matters
But perhaps this member of the Gang stole the show.Stuffing his ears with something so as to only listen to the birds in the sites (or so i thought) he trained his eyes on the ground as if still prospecting
Even for some of our colleagues in the health department (!). They do not get much chance to use the cars and as i sat on the plane i thought, ‘these two only get the chance to visit the sites on a plane’, how weird? And that explains their happiness. Apparently it went on till we landed two and half hours later
But then what was yours faithfully thinking about when someone sneaked a camera and got him squarely? Surely i would be able to answer if i were responsible for the image but as of now let’s just assume he was thinking about where the next blog will come from or you may have a better guess still
And so was it that we ended up in Nairobi after flying over the famous spit. Just as the spit diminishes into the lake looking at it from the Eastern side, so were these generals fading. If you want to know about it ask Kamoya Kimeu

I just wanted to say how beautiful the pictures are on this site! They are simply gorgous and above all you guys finished the expedition on my birthday! I hope to be there as soon as possible and if there is any way for me to volunteer please let me know, because I plan to be a paleoanthropologist and think it would be a great experience!
